Well, school is over finally, BAC acquired and I'm now preparing for big persons school. Next year I'll be studying CS at a place in Paris called Supinfo and I'll need a laptop. The choice is between a lenovo T60p and anything else. The school has a special deal with IBM that means that I can get the 4390euro T60p for 2186euros. Pretty good deal by the numbers, but there seem to be similarly powerful laptops for around 2000euros from a few other companies, here are the specs: Intel Core Duo T2500 (yum) 1GB ram (upgradable to two I think) 100GB 7200rpm HD ATI Fire GL V5200 256MB 15" UXGA screen DVD/RW Dual Layer abg wifi, bluetooth, ethernet etc 3 year guaranty. Faster than my slowly aging desktop. So, for the price..how is it? (by the way it is apparently quite hard to sell these things but some students manage to sell them at the end of the year for around the price they got them for so they can get the updated offer of the next year. Not easy to do though.) Thanks.

FYI: Intel Core is the old crappy Netburst architecture, and not the new Core architecture.

They just want to confuse everyone for some reason.

Core = Yonah = Netburst arch.
Core 2 = Merom = Core arch.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My signature is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My signature, without me, is useless. Without my signature, I am useless.

Now you are confusing people. Yonah is the conceptual predecessor of the core 2 and much close to core 2 processors than to netburst. Nevertheless it might be a good idea to wait for Intel Core 2 Duo based notebooks to arrive (~1 month), if for nothing else but the better resale value.

IBM notebooks are good, but don't let the overinflated list prices fool you, the student offers are just good enough to be competetive with other brands like Samsung or Dell.

I just tryed to put a Dell together with similar components (based on the M90 model) and it came out at 4100euros or so...Samsung is a lot closer to the IBM's price with something almost as powerful from around 2000euros.

The problem with waiting for the new core 2 duos is that I won't get the 50% off and I imagine that they won't be cheap when they come out. The american notebooks are all so depressingly cheap in comparison..the Dell site seems to leave the numbers the same and just replace dollar signs with euro signs..

Heck, if that is the case, get a friend in the 'states to order one for you, then get him to ship it...

Well after looking at the various equivalent offers from some other companies I'm still really tempted by the IBM. They're meant to be pretty solid and with 50% off...Not a bad deal. Purty too. I'll maybe wait and see what the core 2s end up costing first though. Thanks everyone.
