Old shareware war game

I'm trying to think of the name of an old 90's shareware war game. It was played on a hex grid, and I remember the graphics being similar in style to the Hoosier City and RoboMaze games by MVP Software. The gameplay was on a low strategic level, with the map containing a small handful of cities. Each player controlled a few dozen units (at most), including nuclear weapons. There were about a dozen scenarios total, like amphibious landings, tank battles, and various other "themed" battles. It was semi-real-time. All units moved every few seconds, without requiring the player to explicitly end his turn. Intense googling has failed to retrieve anything promising. Any ideas?

No idea but have you tried searching through the Home of the Underdogs?

Moby Games offers a nice search function for narrowing down what you're looking for.

Yeah. I've also checked out MobyGames a few other random game lists.

The only hex-based wargames I can think of from that era are xconq, Tac Ops and Battle Isle. I doubt any of them had a semi-realtime mode.

I think I know what game you are talking about, but unfortunately I didn't spend much time playing it and thus don't remember its name a bit. I remember playing a semi-realtime RTS with crappy looking tanks.

Yeah, I don't even think the units were animated. They were pretty much just icons, IIRC.

Also, I think the graphics were 16-color EGA.

I recall playing a hexagonal tank game that was turn based, but I don't remember the name. Something with the word Tactics or Frontline or Siege.

I found an old game called Front Lines, but the game I'm think of doesn't look nearly as pretty. I couldn't find anything specific on a game with "Tactics" in the title (go figure), and "Siege" didn't turn up anything familiar, either.

Yep, Front Line is what I was thinking of. A fun game from what I remember.

I thought that Home of the Underdogs was gone. I read that the owner couldn't pay for running the site or something. I recall it was meant to be back several months ago, yet I haven't heard anything.

Are you referring to Rapid Response? It sounds very similar to the game you're describing, and I definitely remember playing it a lot when I was younger. If you can't find it on the internets, I'll find my copy of it when I get home (yes, I still have the 3.5 disk somewhere)

Sweet! That's the one. Rapid Response definitely rings a bell. I can't find it on MobyGames or Home of the Underdogs, but I'll keep looking.

Thanks, necreia. I should have tried visiting that site's root after finding the text file there.

The interface is not as good, but the graphics are exactly what I remember. Here are some screenies for the curious:
