i am slightly new to programming and I am very interested in programming Palms and or Pocket PCs. But Id prefer palm programming. But the problem is I have no idea how to and what language they use. How do the pros program palms? I have absolutely no idea how to program them. If anyone knows any books or websites or tutorials that would help i would appreciate it greatly. thank you

I've tried it. It's no fun. Try .Net compact framework programming on PocketPC instead.

If you still want to try it, google is your friend. (That should have some tutorials.)

I tried some Palm programming, and it was a huge pain. For example, you don't have new, delete, malloc, or free. Instead, you have to create a memory handle, lock that handle, use the pointer that gives you, then unlock the handle before doing other stuff. If you don't unlock the handle, it can cause problems because the palm tries to move stuff around in memory but can't if the handle is locked.

You can write PalmOS applications with the PalmOS API in C++. But beware, it's freaking hell. Memory management is.. well "special", you have to have several code sections if you write a lot of code etc. Debugging is quite hard even though there are Palm emulators so a C++ newbie won't find it easy.

But hey go for it, when something works it's kinda fun :)

Check out Eclipse for the IDE and then the PalmOS Developer Suite for Eclipse on the link below.

It's really not THAT bad.

It is much like programming for the Mac from a few years back. That makes sense because tools like CodeWarrior came from the Mac, the Motorola chipset is the same as earlier Macs, and other compilers are derived from the earlier Mac compilers.

The memory management for all platforms was much the same a few years back, and Palm still uses it. Windows still has the older style memory management functions that you still need to use for more advanced memory operations. Handle-based memory management and the other things you call "Special" was the way things were done a few years back on most platforms.
