Is gmail forever?

I'm more and more using my gmail address, including for sollicitations, because it's easier to access and has much better spam filtering than any other mail I got. Do you think gmail will stay in its current form for a long time? That's of course important for me to know for if I'd really start using it as official address. Thanks.

Nothing is forever. However, if the final version lasts as long as the beta, it should be close enough to forever for most peoples needs.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

"if the final version lasts as long as the beta"

Yes indeed, the beta could easily go on for 10 more years at this rate :D

I would be very surprised if Google shut down before any other current e-mail provider.

It's not likely to disappear anytime soon. That said, Google is still very young as a company, and it's still more or less a one-trick Adwords pony. A bankruptcy (which itself is pretty unlikely) could very easily force them to shut down essential services for a period of time.

The safest, cheapest e-mail solution is probably buying your own domain and then setting up an e-mail forwarding service just to route mail to your desired webmail box. You then direct people to send you mail at bob@mydomain.com, but you're actually checking bob@gmail.com. This way, you can use whichever e-mail service you like; everyone just sends mail to you from bob@mydomain. (You'd also need to make sure that your outgoing reply-to is bob@mydomain and not bob@gmail.)

If the e-mail forwarding service fails, you can move to a new one. If your domain host fails, you can move to a new one. If DNS fails, well, we've got a bigger Internet problem than mail not being delivered. And if ICANN fails, then we're really up to our necks in it.
