Dear Java, When I first herd of you back in 96 I was struck with a buzz. I had to meet you and see for myself all that you could do. Once we met, I was instantly intoxicated with your possibilities. I left C++ in the dust and never looked back. I can remember all those applets and server applications we wrote together. They were good times. I have throughly enjoyed your ability to write once and run everywhere... I definitely lusted after you while I watched you dance on all those platforms, even if you fell from time to time. I am very sorry to tell you that our love affair has to end. C++ has come back into my life and I think we can work out the difficulties that we had so long ago. I know this usually does not work, but I do want to be your friend. I would really like to hang out with you from time to time. I think we could still have fun together, but just not all the time. I hope you understand. Bye smc ( an old java fan boy died ) [dead] [Edited by - smc on August 4, 2006 1:14:16 AM]

I read it again and thought it was a bit cheezier then I had intended. You know I have to keep up that great reputation I have here at gamedev [smile]

Don't worry, dear Java - I will always be with you! :D

(C++... only on the sideways... when Java is not looking =)

Hmm... sounds like a lounge thread.

I'd love to replace all of my php code with java though.
Programming since 1995.

Who uses just one programming language exclusively? Use the tools appropriate for each section. If you want to use Java for something, you can easily compile it to native code.

Care to devulge why you two split? I'm curious... and perhaps also on the fringe!

I definitly will continue to use an appropriate tool for the job. Being that I posted this on gamedev.net I was particularly referring to a choice of language for game development. I still have to maintain some java and python based software for the foreseeable future. I was just trying to be funny in a moment of nullness.

Funkapotamus:

I decided to go back to C++ for game development. Don't get me wrong Java is a nice language/platform to use. Tribal Trouble for example is a good game. I just feel I would be severly limiting myself if I did not start using C/C++ for graphics development. When I graduate in a few (prob 3) years I would like to have a better chance at getting a position as a graphics/tools programmer. If my C++ skill's are rusty I don't stand a chance.

Son of Cain:

I did notice a few nights that something just didn't smell right.

Java, it's just that sometimes... when we're talking... it's like there's a barrier there, like we are talking through an interpreter or something. Sometimes I just need more, java.

You see...

Java and C++ if you were only as sexy AND easy as Python then everything would be fine. Python lets me be with C++, and it doesn’t care. In fact Python embraces being together. It’s like the 3-some of programming, all wrapped up together. Sometimes I get so excited at how easy and great Python is I just can stand it. And that is why I have to put your numbers back into the black book cause Python is my girl now.

Yeah, Java may spoonfeed you everything, but you can't easily hack your way around certain problems like you can with C++ as you're forced into going OO.

Plus, it's slow and bloated, and the GUI system sucks monkey balls.

I even read somewhere even the Sun technicians that developed it think/thought Java's bollocks... but I can't remember why Sun kept on producing it, probably $$$.

C++, on the other hand, offers lightning fast code, but it's bloody complicated and you don't get the silver spoon feeding you. But you can also go procedural, which is great for really small HELO WROLD!1 programs.

*sniff* How touching. Programmers really should write soap operas.

Actually, scratch the whole programmers + sopa operas idea.

Java's been really pissing my off *a lot* lately. Not everything is appropriately modeled by a class, dammit!

How about this? [grin]

class SomethingNotModeledByAClass
{
public static void DoSomething() { }
}

I've taken to doing something like this:
public class Something{int a; //global variablepublic static void main(String[] args){//do stuff; if you need to call any functions,//they are private and static.}}

I basically scroll to the middle and forget that I'm in a class. [grin]
