I asked a little bit ago about how to make it so the next time I decide to reformat, I could just install with a winxp version with sp2 and was then referred to 'slipstreaming.' Now 1)I don't understand why this process isn't listed in Microsoft.com which is making me a little suspecting.. and 2) I'd really prefer it if I was able to get a CD version of winxp sp2 from Microsoft. But if this isn't the [possible] case, the site I referred to ^ says to get sp2 in a zip file. Now the only way I've obtained sp2 was via windows update on MS.com. How do I go about getting this sp2 file?

Well to get the sp2 file, just download the network install version of sp2 from microsoft. Its about 220 mb. And I know MS does have a how too, its just not real pretty and you have to use some kind of ISO tool. Search MS's website.

... yet another reason I hate the pc games industry (big companies, I like indies! :) ), for what people say about Microsoft, they probably have the fairest and best method of installation with the most flexible licence terms. They have recently had questionable tactics with the recent news, however generally and in most cases, it only targets pirates. There is a lot more work that needs doing, however I just think Microsoft is one of the best companies in this respect!

I cant help you with slipstreaming, I personally (before getting domain and automated stuff) created a install script and just made it install sp2 with default options the moment windows was installed.

Is this a safe reliable way to go about this process?

Probably your best bet for slipstreaming is to use nLite.

It will add SP2 to your installation, plus do a bunch of other stuff, and then make an ISO for you at the end. I've used it several times. Never got the automatic hotfixes or drivers to work, but everything else works great.

this site has a much better overview of the proccess. It also shows you how to silently install lots of software. Currently with everything I install my windows install is about 25GB.

you should also check their message board, besides gamedev its probly the most helpfull forum I have run across on the net.

also check this site out, it allows you to integrate all the post-SP2 hotfixes into the CD.
