I have encountered the same old problem, I thought I already solved a long time ago. I have a full screen application. When I have an error in my application I throw an exception. This cause many of my classes to call dtr, include my D3DDevice class, which then call Release. Then I use a simple windows dialog to present the error. However, there is a black screen left from the full version mode, and if I try to show a message box, it is not seen. But I know its "there" because of the sound made by trying to click somewhere and bu pressing Enter it is "freed". So how do I return the window mode properly? Thanks in advance.

All you need to do is close the window that you used for Fullscreen. If you close the handle for that window, the black screen will go away and you'll have things restored. Releasing the D3D device should techically have the same effect...
