How can I detect whether a graphics adapter (is/supports?) HAL or REF? I tried getting the device capabilities through IDirect3D9::GetDeviceCaps() but this method allows me to specify the device type (HAL/REF/etc). So if I get the HAL device capabilities, wouldn't the DeviceType field of the D3DCAPS9 object be set to HAL?

The ref device is only available if you have the SDK installed, so not on end uder machines. A graphics adapter will never support a reference device, because a reference device is software, not hardware (Which a HAL device is)

A graphics adapter can't be HAL or REF. HAL uses the hardware when possible and falls back to software when not possible while REF is 100% software.

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up for me. I thought that REF was used when hardware support isn't available.
