hello gamedev uzers! I am an amateur programmer . Im a big fan of art and games , and since I tried painting and didnt worked that good for me i decided to turn to games programming. I am flirting for some time now with the idea to make a game. Nothing fancy , im not going to make a killer game not even a game close to quake 1. Im looking forward for a very simple game with handmade (by me ) graphics. So far things are good ( did i make u bored to death ? ,sorry) . I want to make a tron like game and now the hard things . Which lang should i use? java or c++ . i suck in both languages but i mainly want to make the game so i can practise in code writing and using diferent libraries managing a project and stuff like that. it will be my first 'real' project. I tend to like java more than c++ .seems easier to me. BUT the tutorials/engines and helpfull stuff about game writing and java is too little :( and then games written in java even less. C++ seems to have a huge source code to see and study . :( Any suggestions ? Do i continue with java ? or move to c++ ? PS:performance and top notch tech is not an issue to my stupid game . i just want meterial to study. and java material is really have to find. everywhere i look in the web site related to java i keep finding web technologies. whats wrong with java ? they promote Web development and server side development so hard that confuse the new programmers very much. Thanx in advance about this weird post . sorry for my english and my allaround messed topic. :) -Keep on selling me my future....

Hi!

Well, first off... I suggest you focus on *programming* alone. Be it Java or C++, you'll first have to learn the basics of the language you choose - the syntax, the way it does OO (object orientation, assuming you'll pick either Java or C++), the basic data structures it provides by default, etc. Once you're confortable with programming alone - by confortable I mean being able to figure out the amount of work necessary to accomplish a given task - you can start delving into game programming.

There is a lot of material on Java game programming, but indeed, if you throw a search on the "Java" term alone, you'll end up with a lot of non-related (to games) results. I suggest you take a look at Java Gaming.org, or even the Java Games Factory (I don't have the link, sorry =).

Wheter you choose C++ or Java... even for the simplest game, there will be a lot of work ahead of you, so you're warned. But it surely pays off :D
