I cannot find any real good reference material on SDL. Could someone point me in the right directio where I can find all the commands and examples of how to use them. right now I am trying to figure out how to write plain text to the screen. If there are no good documentation on SDL is there another good 2D engine out there that does have good documentation?

Here is the main SDL documentation.

SDL does not have any text rendering support, but SDL_ttf does, and it's very easy to use. Here is a great tutorial on how to use it. In fact, all of Lazy Foo's tutorials are great.

Also I should mention that SDL is generally not considered to be an "engine". An engine generally refers to a higher level API that is specifically made to make games. SDL gives you a fairly low-level way to access the hardware.

Hope that helps.
