Do ID3 tags take up space on an mp3 file? Like.. say two exact same songs but one with album artwork and one without?

Of course. It's a set of strings appended to the end of the file.

I don't know about album artwork specifically.

Was just curoius cuase the song capacity on my portable player was reduced by a couple sogns when I did a major album artwork update on my songs. almost none of them had one at the start to about 96% of them having them on the next update. I had to get rid of like 4 or 5 songs.

The answer is yes and no. id3 is the last 128 bytes of an mp3 file. If you have any id3 data at all it takes up 128 bytes. Most encoders will place some id3 data in, so changing id3 data will not change the amount of space taken up by the file. Artwork is not part of id3, only text.

id3v2 (the only version that has a field for album art) can take up more than 128 bytes. In iTunes, album art is merely an ID3 tag that links to an image stored in the playlist data.

id3v1 is restricted to 128 bytes.
