[rant] I just got a promotion at work from a warehouse worker to a webdesigner who makes 360 3d spin around of the products (i had them buy the new swift 3d)... then i saw the machine they wanted me to work with... there were a few things wrong with it; 1.)it has an ecs motherboard.... for those who don't know, ecs motherboards are absolute crap and are likely to give you a ton of problems. 2.)it only has 256mb of sd pc 133 ram... 3.)worst of all it had been running for god knows how long with the psu fan dead and no rear exaust fan! the thing was too hard to touch when i first got to it. now, i took the thing home, opened up the psu, replaced the fan with one of the same size and power requirements... hooked it all back up, turned it on, watched as the new fan ran great.................... started using it and then a huge amount of sparks and smoke came out of it! scared the crap out of me since i had the damn thing on my lap. i opened it back and and saw that almost all of the circuits (resisters, tranformers, ic's...ect) were black and burnt. so now i am very pissed and am going to have to carry in my home pc into work tomorrow, won't that be fun (i'll have to clean a few things out first though ;) so, aren't old computers fun ;) [/rant]

Sounds like a pain in the butt to me. I hope they don't charge you for it. And grats on the promotion!

well, i am awake this morning and a little more relaxed. i figure i'll just replace the computer that died with one of my spare ones.... but ti will take me a little bit ot get it ready.
as for it blowing up, i had the fan connected to the same preious connector. i think thr weeks of running like an oven did actually damage the psu, what a surprise! ;-)

Just because it's not an Asus doesn't mean it's crap. I've seen loads of crap motherboards BY Asus.

I think you should be able to make the case to your manager to buy some nicer hardware. Computers are remarkably cheap nowadays, and an upgrade will improve your efficiency. Everyone understands the benefit of better tools (especially since they bought you new shiny software).

This'll give you a good life lesson.
