What is the best way to go about saving user's preferences? Storing them, line by line in a .txt file? Encrypting them? Putting the file in a different folder from the main application Using the registry? I do not want to use the registry, but if it is greatly suggested, I see no problem in doing so.

As an user, I really enjoy configuration files that are human-readable (that is, some kind of INI or XML syntax) and placed in an expected place (such as the same directory as the game, or a subdirectory thereof).

You should create an ini file in \Documents and Settings\#username\Application Data\#nameOfYourApplication.

You can make it just a text file or an xml file to speed data retrival.
