Hooray free source code!

Sorry to break it to you, but John Carmack has been releasing his source code under GPL (or similar licenses) for about a decade now. You're just a tad behind the times.

I had a lecture once on prehistory...

I think I recall something about id software and such.

Didn't they release the Half-Life 2 source a while back... ?

No.

That HL2 build was leaked, though I assume it was a publicity stunt to buy more time (they suddenly "needed to change" a lot of things so cheaters wouldn't be able to use the insights gained from the source - which either means their design was/is ridiculously bad and flawed, or they simply wanted more time).

That just ignores the fact that people were actually arrested for stealing it. I don't know what came of them.

Edit: At least one person was convicted in Germany.
