Hello, I was just wondering, is using your computer recovery disk on your computer the samething as reformating? Also, I've probably used my recovery disk about 8 times already. is this bad?

(disclaimer - I have no idea what I'm talking about)

Short answer: yes.
Long Awnser: Formatting a computers hard drive wipes out the existing filesystem and/or partitions and replaces it with a new empty one. Recovery disks do the same thing except for replacing the filesystem with a blank one, it gives you a filesystem with all the data already in place.

As for refformating 8 times, I don't know if it's bad or not, but WHY?

I think the answer is "maybe." Some recovery disks don't really "reformat," they just like reisntall Windows on top of the old one. If all your files, programs, and windows settings are gone after you use your recovery disk, then yes you have reformated your hard drive, at least the one with the Windows on it.

I've reformated more than 8 times in my life (the 4 years I've started using a computer), so it's not a bad thing. Of course, I've gone through three computers and many hard drive failures. If you reformatted 8 times in like a month, then yes, something is wrong, though most likely hardware-wise (the bad kind).
