hi, i was wondering, if the online game Runescape isnt too laggy, id like to make online games that run by applets, and save info on the server. or basically i was wondering what i need to know to make a tiny 2d version of a Runescape type game. SQL? php? or java only? im just not sure how all those things fit in or what they are used for. do i combine php with java?

That kind of depends on what you ACTUALLY want to do.

Applets just aren't the right solution for multi-player online games, if you want to support interactive movement, because the only networking they are allowed to do is to do HTTP requests back to the server they came from.

To develop a small 2D networked game, I would probably write a java app proper, and then a java server that echoed chat and positions between players. The problem comes in hosting that server: your typical web host will only allow the web servers they already have, on their servers.

FYI: (unsigned) applets can communicate back to the server they originate from, and they can do this over sockets and datagrams next to HTTP posts.

Runescape (the unsigned version) does this. Run a proxyserver on the applet server and proxy the data between the applets that are connected to it. Signed applets can communicate with each other directly which might save you some extra latency.
