Hey everyone, i've been working on this library for the last month or so, trying to learn a few things about making a game... I finally made it work and i was wondering if it can ever be of any use to anyone? I put it on the net, it's at http://gamedev.orgfree.com/gdk.html , so check it out. You can only make small games with it due to the lack of optimization in the code and because it does't have a model editor, but that's under way. Hope to hear your oppinions (hopefully it doesn't stink too much :D )

You really need to redesign that page, with a more static look.

Don't take what I say too badly, you might or might not know this, but you aren't good enough yet to share your projects. Every single page contains 100s of errors, logical errors, design errors and even syntax errors. Are you actually testing in VC++5 since you say that it's supported? I hope not. Also you need to acquire a spelling checker.

You need to work on your documentation

Open source means that it's freeware, it's main purpose being that of reserch or strictly educational.

Open source is not neccesarily freeware, also reserch is a horrible misspelling.

Quote:
A Developpement Kit is a collection of programming tools, utilities, documentation, and libraries of functions or classes that facilitate construction of applications for a specific platform or purpose.

No that isn't what development kit is, also Developpement Kit shouldn't start with capital letters, and development is spelled wrong.

Quote:
you only have two ways to do it : start from scratch or use a game development kit.

Once more, just no. I could start with a C++ compiler and Direct3D, neither of those is game development kits, but I won't start from scratch either.

The development kit is an instance of evolution.
An instance of evolution?

I won't focus more on the errors in the text (both grammatical and logical). Even your source, in the documentation, isn't close to correct:
struct glColor{ float red, green, blue, contrast} bgColor;<!--QUOTE-->

You need a ; after contrast, and you can't declare a bgColor element like that.

Your actual source code isn't correct either, you seem to forget to include any standard headers, that all non-macro objects of the SC++L is in namespace std, etc. You lack a proper naming convention for your code and re-invent very stupid things like an absolute value function (see std::abs). Also I'm not quite sure what kind of design you were aiming for, in any case you don't have a decent procedural or OO design. You haven't even rounded your pi2 variable (the digit after your last one is 8, so the correct value would be 3.1415926536, not 3.1415926535. Some of your comments isn't in English (what does "Translate camera inapoi" or "Translate camera la pozitie" mean?) You compare floating point numbers without considering that their precision is finite. You sometimes mispell vector as versor. This was just my first impression by opening two header files.

The website really needs to be redone, I won't even look at the code until you redo your website.

The blinking background and animations on the page give me a headache :(

Making a SDK is difficult, getting people to use it is even more difficult. For that you will need to make a more comfortable website.

After looking at your code I can even tell you that people will not use it. You have everything in header files. Then you only have a very basic support of the OpenGL functionality (not even vertex buffers, etc). You better add more functionality in it before it comes to use to anyone.

Good luck with your GDK!

The name GDK is not a good choice because there are some other well-known toolkits out there using this abbreviation (for a long time I might add!) If you want to increase your userbase then you should use some other name instead. Also "Development Kit" is really misleading anyway, why not simply release it as a library or "toolkit" like GLUT or FLTK.

I concur with others observation about the website. You also need to include some screen grabs with some eye-candy.

CTar, thanks for the reality check, guess i needed that. Thanks for the heads up on the VC++ 5, i'm actually working with VC++ 6 and i forgot about the ; issue with VC++ 5. Nevertheless, portability is the least of my problems right now, as you pointed out. I'll scrap the documentation and make a new, more direct one, and as far as the code goes, i'll clean it up when i'm finished with it. Maybe i'll even compile it into some dll's to at least make it look professional :P

Thank everyone for the observation about the website. It wasn't intended to store these files, i made it for the google ads and i didn't have time to make a new page for the project. I'll start working on a new web page right away.

Jeroenb, thanks for the comment, i'll learn more about GL. I like your JEngine :)

I'll also think of a new name for the library.

Thanks again for your repplies, hope to talk again.

Hey man. My website is down so I can't show you this. But I had made a sort of library/toolkit for OpenGL that worked very well. It had a lot of OpenGL functionality included as well as input and sound. It didn't have any obvious bugs and it worked like a charm. It even had a system for loading and drawing .md2 models and also animating them and even returning when the animation was done so the code using it could automatically swap animations without worry. I also implemented a good lighting engine, OpenGL fog, multitexturing, 3dfonts, and a couple of other things. I tried to "publish" this to other people, and I found out that other people usually are more interested in there own code. Maybe people who are newer to programming can use it, but even when they do, they redo it to there own purpose. My code didn't have the problems your code does(according to above posts), and even then, I couldn't get people to use it. They looked and commented, but as far as using it, not happening. One way(not the only one) to get people to use your code is to create an actual high quality 3d engine. Niko has a lot of people using Irrlicht, which is a free-opensource 3d engine. It is still in developement done mostly by one person, but it is usable and has good quality and lots of features that commercial 3d engines have. Lots of people use it.

Point is, most programmers that don't use there own code or redid from other sources are using a full blown engine(2d or 3d), not a simple little toolkit(unless they made it themselves).

My first impulse upon seeing this header is, (aside from the spelling mistakes and seizure-inducing website) when there are existing tried-and-true libraries that already offer more than your library does, how does your library compare? How does it outshine them?

What makes an open-source library such as this attractive, is (a) level of completion, (b) ease of use, and (c) lots of support or community interaction.

Good luck!
