I am working on the installer for my game, but have come across a few problems. One being that I've never made an installer before, but thats not a big problem. Its an MSI project right now. Needs to support Vista Parental Settings and Validation. I think I need a bootstrapping program to make sure users has correct version of .MSI, I really don't know how to do that. The installer needs a unique interface this includes the border so no windows border, and skinning. I can do this just fine in a Win32/MFC app, but the programs I have been looking at I'm finding it hard to know where to even begin trying to skin them. (Wix and InstallShield) with Installshield they have a bootstrap setup.exe provided for you which is nice, but I can't seem to be able to create a InstallScript MSI project that will let me use my own custom action. When I create a Basic MSI with InstallShield it has a different configuration that allows me to put them in. I also couldn't find the sequencing for the InstallScript application, but I believe that because the script might be handling that not too sure only been using it for 3 days now. I just need to learn a lot about them quickly so that its useful in the time frame. My heart isn't set on any installer at the moment, so if you have a suggestion for one to use, or an alternative I am open for suggestions.

I suppose if none of them work for you, you could just program your own if you're up to reinventing the wheel.

I wouldn't mind writing my own, but there are factors like time that are not going to allow me to learn to do all that. Time right now is my biggest factor.

For a school project, I used NSIS. I highly recommend it. It's a scriptable installer and you can make an installer and uninstaller with it with no problem at all.

I don't know enough about NSIS. The application would need to be "only" removed from Add/Remove Program menu, no other way acceptable.
