I make use of that message all the time. It tells me if my router died again, or if my landlord just unplugged me.

Looks normal right? Well, today was August 7th, and the version it wanted to replace was also dated August 7th. It wanted to replace a file that had lost two minutes worth of work, with a file dated 5 days ago....

The joke is on it being wireless connection and then saying the cable is unplugged.

Maybe we are waiting for the new wireless-cables to come on to the market.

The comment still makes perfectly good sense to me. But, without knowing the circumstances in which it appears, I suppose I'll take you at your word that its terribly funny.

Yes, of course your comment still makes sense.

But, well, wrong cable. And the joke linked above.

You know, renaming "Local Area Connection" to "Wireless Network Connection" is really quite easy to do...
"Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The nly verdict is vengeance; a vendett o

It's genuine; it happened when my WRT54G hung itself up.

The machine already knows that it's a wireless connection: it has a different little icon for wifi adaptors in the taskbar, even. It's just a little detail overlooked that's nice to chuckle at.

It might not even be Windows' fault; it's a pretty terrible driver, and the string might be stored in the driver code.

Mmh, too bad I'm packet-switched or they could just say "the ring has fallen out of the token ring network".

Looks like a hoax to me. In Windows XP, the network icon for local connections look like two computers. A wireless connection, on the other hand, looks like one computer with radio waves emanating from its right-hand side. It appears someone renamed one of their local connections to appear to be wireless in an attempt to be clever.

Here's a picture of what they look like, side-by-side. The icon on the leftmost side of the shot is a wireless connection; the icon to its right is a LAN connection.

It came from my desktop box, and it did happen. I took the screenshot. I assure you it's authentic. It seems to display the wrong icon, now that I look at it.

I suspect it's because of the crappy Asus driver (it uses some sort of weird Asus front-end application and doesn't let me use XP zeroconf to manage it).

I remember when Pouya had photoshopped some networking dialog box to say "Notworking". At least I think it was Pouya...
