My computer recently crashed and needed a full windows reinstall. When I went to download the DirectX9 SDK from windows, only SDKs for DirectX10 were available. Does any one know off the top of their heads where I can find the most recent DirectX9 SDK? Thanks TLAK

There is no DX10 SDK yet. The current DX9 SDKs include a beta of D3D10, which you're free to ignore, though you will have to download an extra few hundred megs.

Go here, which is basically Microsoft's home for everything DirectX, and choose the August 2006 DirectX SDK link.

I know, they're gigantic[sad]. The Platform SDK and MSVC++ had internetbased installer but I don't think the DXSDK has them.

Alright, now I have a new problem :
The following code returns the 'unable to create rendering device' message. I've been looking around, but all I've been able to turn up is that this means that the device doesn't support the call. I don't think that's the problem, but either way, does any one have any ideas on how to fix it?

bool initDirect3D(){	pD3D = NULL;	pd3dDevice = NULL;	// create the directX object	if( NULL == ( pD3D = Direct3DCreate9( D3D_SDK_VERSION ) ) )	{		MessageBox(NULL,"Unable to create the directX   object","ERROR",MB_OK);                return false;	}	// fill the presentation parameters structure	D3DPRESENT_PARAMETERS d3dpp;         ZeroMemory( &d3dpp, sizeof(d3dpp) );        d3dpp.Windowed = TRUE;        d3dpp.SwapEffect = D3DSWAPEFFECT_DISCARD;        d3dpp.BackBufferFormat = D3DFMT_UNKNOWN;	d3dpp.BackBufferCount  = 1;	d3dpp.BackBufferHeight = 480;	d3dpp.BackBufferWidth  = 640;	d3dpp.hDeviceWindow    = wndHandle;	// create a default directx device        if( D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE==( pD3D->CreateDevice( D3DADAPTER_DEFAULT,   D3DDEVTYPE_REF, wndHandle,D3DCREATE_SOFTWARE_VERTEXPROCESSING,                                      &d3dpp, &pd3dDevice ) ) )        {            MessageBox(NULL,"Unable to create DirectX device","Function not available",MB_OK);            return false;        }        MessageBox(NULL,"Direct3D has been initialized","Direct3D",MB_OK);	  return true;}

Big thanks

I'm just curious: Does it work if you remove these lines

d3dpp.BackBufferCount  = 1;d3dpp.BackBufferHeight = 480;d3dpp.BackBufferWidth  = 640;d3dpp.hDeviceWindow    = wndHandle;

EDIT: Actually removing line 2 and 3 here would be sufficient...

Then your code would be equivalent to the SDK tutorial sample and should work.

Not sure, but a problem might be that you set the backbuffer size to another then the window size, which may make the front and back buffers of different sizes. To keep in mind is that the size you specify in createwindow is not the client area size...

Another thing: It's not the function that is not available, it's the current parameter setting that isn't available/supported.

Hope this was a little help.

P.S. A suggestion: Post new topics in new threads! They will get read more often if there aren't already many replies...

You haven't linked the right libs (Assuming you use MVSC++) or included the right headers...I think it's the first one.
