Browser Based MMORPG makes more instant sense, but I believe MUD is more dictatively correct. Anyhow, I'm a self-taught Java programmer with some helpless highschool courses of computer science (Java exclusive) under my belt. Knowing Java, other languages are easy to grasp. I've been in and out of browser based games for a while in my spare time because I've picked up an interest in creating one. Although most in awe of Ferion, I came across PhantasyRPG and realized that, as a hobby, I'd like to create a game of such sort. To run down said game, user creates character. With some money from creation, he can visit the town shops and equip himself with various weapons and armor. From there, he can enter the Sewers from a link from the city navigation and click on tiles where he wants to move, and a sprite actually appears at tiles he chooses to move to. Random tiles give you the option to enter combat. When in combat, you can choose your attacks, use items, or run away. As the player progresses in level, allocating skill points to basic attributes like STR, he can then enter more formidable dungeons and such and fulfill quests. Yeah. It's nothing we haven't seen a thousand times. Oh wait, that's all a game needs for us to label it a RPG. But aside the point. Anyhow, I concluded that such a game likely is built with AJAX on top of obvious PHP and MySQL structure. Today I spent all day at Barnes and Noble looking at some AJAX books and also some PHP databasing foundations. Easy to pick up. My problem is just starting out. Since this is a hobby of mine, I want to start out with simplicity running on my Apache localhost. Maybe a program that keeps track of logging in/out with associated characters, editing and storing character stats, and maybe some simple character quests, like fetching an item from across a tiled map. Where do I begin? Writing AJAX, PHP and MySQL? Easy. But constructing from scratch? Not so inviting. I've been looking around for a few days (as I just started getting interested in this the other day) but found little help from other forums and such. Anyone have such experience? Once again I have background programming and I understand how databasing and PHP and AJAX scripting works, but I really don't know how to begin implementing it in unison to pursue my hobby.

Well currently I'm doing a *similar* thing, mines not graphics based as such, but its along the same lines. if you want to take a look you have to sign up to www.silentdragon.co.uk and then click the 'Game' links. You can't do a great deal, just recruit yourself a small army, but like you I'm just starting =]

If you're curious where to start, I started with the login, basically get the database & PHP script for logging in and registering and logging out. Then you can do things like have restricted pages that you can only view if you are logged in, or have the right access rights (useful to have game admins and etc).

With my project I'm also developing my own forum to go with the game, so the progress on the game is slowed by progress on the forum and vice versa, but if you want help/advice/someone to talk to, feel free to add me to msn or PM me =]

Thanks,
Alan

Hmm... I'm not sure how I missed this post.

I'm currently 2.5 years into developing a game 'similar' to what you described above. Its browser based, it requires users to login, etc... and is built on PHP/MySql.

If you want to be able to develop locally (which everyone does), the first thing I'd have you do is download WAMP. You can find it here:

http://www.wampserver.com/en/

This will set up apache, php and mysql on your computer at home. From there, you set up a www folder, put your code into it, and then build away. It also sets up phpmyadmin, which is quite helpful.

Then, once you have that going, and you've played around enough to where you feel comfortable, you can begin all the fun stuff :)

If you need any help from there, these php-mysql game based projects are my favorite. I'd be glad to give you some advice.

I've created a php/mysql browser based game for the last 2 years (coding for the last 6 months). This version is beta and really just testing the waters to see if I could code it.

http://www.createorconquer.com

I've even made the world building system public to members so they can add items, containers, traps, buildings - and create chatrooms, vendors, merchants, vaults, crafthouses. Items can be recipes and require other items like resources.

I checked out PhantasyRPG, pretty cool I haven't seen it before...

I'm looking for feedback on my game, and where to take it next. I wish I could do graphics - and I hear artists saying they wish they could so code... :)

SilentDragon, your page timed out - I'd like to check out your game, will try the link later.

My personal recommendation is to get hold of Abyss web server, MySQL and Perl or PHP (as you prefer) and you can have the whole thing running from a USB drive or as I have a 32Mb virtual RAM drive so there is no disk access!

I have stripped out all of the 'junk' fom each (help files ec..) and I have the whole lot in approx 9Mb

Your server-side code (perl/PHP) simply reads and writes data your HTML/&#106avascript sends and gets from it.<br/><br/>As for existing games worlds, yes I have one too: Creative Object World (cow) http://creativeobjectworld.com<br/><br/>Its mostly text based (understands basic english) and as yet very free-form so anyone can create just about anything and script stuff using CowScript which I wrote specially to manipulate objects.<br/><br/>COW is very text-based but does handle graphics to represent objects and does a fun 'radar' map of your near surroundings (thank hevens for CSS and relative positioning)<br/><br/>On the other side of the coin I have used a simiar setup to make a purely graphic game (right now representing a pokemon style world but I have an isometric version Im working on too) http://wolispace.com/josh<br/><br/>
. Creative Object World/_ creativeobjectworld.com// "What is the world coming to?"
