JIT compilation

well, I can't lead you to any good sites on JIT compilation, but AFAIK JIT and Dynamic Recompilation are pretty much the same thing, although I've never heard the term Dynamic Recompilation being used anything other than actual emulation, all virtual machines I've seen that use it have referred to it as JIT Compilation. Maybe JIT Compilation not only refers to how it handles garbage collection? I could be entirely wrong though.
one thing you could do if you're designing a virtual machine is to base the opcodes around the instruction set of the system you are going to be running it on, and then find a way to compile that and run it...but then you need to keep things like memory access and never ending loops under control so that you don't end up freezing any body's system with a simple while loop(or allowing somebody else to).
but this is also coming from someone who cannot seem to get a working virtual machine running, so I cannot guarantee anything I am saying is 100% accurate.
