Hi I need a bit of clarity as I can't figure this out and can't realy find enough information in the Intel reseller section :S does the intel core 2 duo superseed the pentium d? I am getting really confused trying to price up a pc for a customer, and it looks like all the latest intel mobos support core 2 duo, but cores for notebooks? are their separate core 2s for desktops than laptops, or have they merged everything and core 2 is the latest? Thanks

Yes, the Core 2 Duos supersede the Pentium Ds, and are available in notebooks as well. The Core 2 Duo model numbers are different in notebooks; desktops have the e6300, e6600, etc., while notebooks have the T5600, T7200, etc., if I remember correctly.

Some companies have not yet adopted the Core 2s for their notebooks, but most major companies, such as Dell, HP, Gateway, and Toshiba have.

I am a intel IPI and they just didnt have the info in their reseller section, it refears everywhere to the intel core 2 duo, and it says on the new boards intel core 2 duo.... on my distributors, it lists both, however it doesnt say what the diffrences are..

now I know!

Thanks

The Core 2 Duos are so much better than the Pentium Ds that the Pentium Ds are effectively obsolete now. Unless you get a ridiculously cheap price on a Pentium D you'd be crazy to buy one. Much lower power consumption, much lower heat output and much higher performance. For the first time in many years Intel chips are actually a better choice than AMD. Check out some reviews.

So when is the Core 2 Quadro coming out? Actually, I think it's still supposed to be called Duo, even though it will have 4 cores.

Kentsfield is the codename for it, and it looks like it's going to be visiting around the beginning of 2007.

Here's a great article on the Core 2 Quadro (Kentsfield).

It looks to continue Conroe's pattern of total ownage.
Intel's Core 2 Quadro Kentsfield: Four Cores on a Rampage

Most amazingly, they can be overclocked 3.33GHz at stock voltage:

The Sandra benchmarks are incredible:

as are the 3d Mark 06 scores:

I didn't see an exact date for the Core 2 Quadro release, but I assume it'll be soon.

Wasn't there some Pentium D Dual Core model (for under 100USD) that could be overclocked to 4GHz on air? That still might be a better deal than the Core 2 Duos (price/performance)

Believe it or not, the E6600 Conroe overclocks on air, on average, to at least 3.5GHz. Some people have reached 4GHz on air.

Even with a minimal overclock to 3GHz it outperforms almost everything, IIRC.

Yes, but it required a massive amount of power IIRC.

Yes, but it required a massive amount of power IIRC.

A Geforce 7950 in SLI takes a lot of power, but it doesn't stop people from doing it [wink].

the Tom's Hardware article said as early as October of this year.

after I said thanks, I did not realise there would be more posts on this topic!

anyway, thanks for all this info, I generally am up on the knowledge with all of this, but when names cross, it gets me confused, what does not help is on the intel site/s it refears to it as "core 2 duo" and doesnt easily differentiate between desktop/laptop varieties.

next, trying to work out paths to upgrade the base machines I sell... it is annoying to explain to the lesser technically minded people that a core 2 duo 1.8ghz is faster than their few year old 3.4 ghz p4 :S

anyway, thanks everyone, and interesting about quad core! product releases so close together get confusing! The Pentium D really did not last long! anyone know if the "Pentium" is now dead?
