About a year ago I decided to try beer, and to see if I could like it. I tried beers from different countries and different sorts of beers (ales, wheat beer, and so on), but I wasn't able to find anything with a taste that I liked. Budweiser in a can was the worst. The foam of a Guinness from a can with a widget tasted promising, but the actual drink was too strong for me. I think Amstel Light or Heineken was the easiest to drink. One thing I didn't do was stick with one beer and keep drinking it until I started getting used to the taste. Should I try that next? What beer did you guys start out with? I'll see if I can list what I've tried so far: Budweiser, Guinness, Amstel Light, Heineken, Red Hook Blonde Ale, some Double Stout Chocolate, Fat Tire Amber Ale, Coors Light, Blue Moon (I think), and Pacifico. There's a couple others I'm forgetting about.

Which of those did you like best, and what would you change about them?

mmm, I had a couple cans of Blue Moon a couple months back. Really enjoyed it - it had a nice strong flavor that was just... mmm.

Granted, I could probably say the same thing about a lot of the better beers. Its just that I'm a poor college student, and generally drink whatever piss is being served that night [sad]

Best beer I ever had was some German (Bavarian, I believe) "gourmet" brew on tap at a small pub in New York's East Village. Generally, beer tastes horrible to me.

I usually buy the kinds I know I like (Heineken is good, Kilkenny is great), along with something new that I havent tried before. The new one usually tastes like piss (beer has a strange tendancy to do that...), but once in a while you strike gold and can add another favorite to the Liked-Beers :)

I like corona, doesn't taste like piss as much as the other beers do to me [wink].

But what would you suggest, i would love to try out other beers.

Find a good microbrewery in your area and sample their offerings. You'll always get better results closer to the source than in mass-produced/distributed form.

The main thing to figure out is what type you dislike the least. Most beer-afficionados will reach a point where they like several kinds (for instance I personally like just about everything to some extent) but unless/until you've developed a taste for it there's no sense wasting time and money on things you don't care for.

Hit up some ales, lagers, a good wheat beer, and maybe a couple members of the stout family. Taste, strength, and finish all vary quite a bit even within the categories, so sampling a variety of brews is very much to your advantage when looking for stuff you like.

Sam Adams has some decent stuff (as far as macrobrewed beer goes); from what I hear their seasonal Octoberfest is a pretty good introductory brew, and we're smack in the middle of the season for that, so it should be easy to find. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is near the top of my list, but I tend to favor ales over lagers. Heineken is a decent lager, but you're really better off with a microbrew in that arena IMHO. I like a good stout (or, better, a dark wheat) but they're harder to find in major labels in the US. Spaten is a very good brew, but their export stuff isn't nearly as good as the authentic München brew. For a good wheat beer, try Franziskaner (avoid the Dunkel if you're not a big fan of powerful, dark beer).

Sample a wide range as much as possible; but keep in mind that, after all, beer just may not be your thing. (This is a good outcome as it leaves more for the rest of us [wink])

I recommend newcastle brown ale, but don't drink it from the bottle. Pour it in a glass. Don't be afraid to pour it down the middle either. It tastes better after some of the carbonation is released. Next to that I'd have to say Guinness draft is my favorite. Fat tire is disgusting. Hobgoblin is good too, but I've yet to find a liquor store in my area that sells it in six packs. They always sell it in singles.

As other students without job I drink the cheapest your money can buy...

But when having a bit more money on my hands I do like the average danishman and buy a standard Tuborg Grøn or Carlsberg.

I usually drink lager which by many is called watery. But you seem to get used to a specific type of beer. Now I can't drink ales without feeling like I'm drinking cream...
I would ofcourse recommend drinking lager[smile]

Did you try Palm Special? Even my girlfriend drinks it when it comes out of the fridge, and she doesn't like beer at all.

Or you could try cherry beer, which is quite sweet. I prefer a Pauwelse Kwak tho.

This is my favourite beer! I've event got the special glass as well (and a spare stand [sad]).

Fortunately, there is a shop that sells it only a mile away from where I live and there's even a pub in Sheffield that has it on draught. [grin]

If you're restricting yourself to beer that comes in cans, then you're always going to have a problem. The best kind of beer, regardless of what anyone else might say, is British "real ale," and should be drunk from a pint glass that has been poured, via a pump and system of pipes, from a keg.

Well, I enjoy a lot of the good Canadian (or not so now) beers that are smooth, Moosehead and Sleeman are my favourite. I'm also a fan of the bitter type beers like Becks. I could tell you more about hard liquor then I could about beer though, I don't really drink beer to get drunk.

That setup sounds suspiciously like the internet - have you been clogging those tubes again?

Also - I really enjoy Leffe Blonde, which, unfortunately, is impossible to find in my area :|

Second the vote for Corona. It's great. I like Cobra & Grolsh (spelling?) too.
As far as real beer goes, I prefer pale ales.
As far as pretend real beers goes, Caffreys is good.

anyway, there is really so many kinds of beer, finding ones you like is a matter of experiment. :) when drinking lager, remember that is should be well refridgeerated. they tend to forget that in some countries.

Definitely. We like to put lager in the freezer until it just starts to get tiny ice crystals. I believe thats how they serve it on tap in the US?

Any beer that doesn't taste as good when it isn't freezing your tastebuds, is not a good beer.

Have you tried Leffe Brune? I noticed a restaurant in my town had some on tap recently and personally I think it's better than the Blonde version.

If you don't already, try drinking it with a wedge of lime (a friend of mine once ordered a Corona with Lime in a pub, however he was misheard and got a pint of Kronenbourg with a shot of lime cordial instead [grin]).
