Hey I never get impressed of the results from all sprite/tile tutorials on the net. I want to learn how to draw good looking sprites ala Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Mega man etc.. any books or online tutorials to recommand?
Problems every where

Well first you need a good artist. There shouldn't be any problems with any of the tutorials on the web they all draw the sprites as well as the artist has drawn them.

First of all, you need to read "So you want to be a pixel artist" by Tsugomo. You can get it here: http://www.zoggles.co.uk/asp/tutorials.asp?tut=17
After you're done with that

Now, here's some other great tuts:

http://www.zoggles.co.uk/asp/tutorials.asp?tut=6&page=14 - Brickwork how-to

http://www.zoggles.co.uk/asp/tutorials.asp?tut=7&page=15 - spiky hair

Having used it myself, I gotta say that it's an excellent resource for people interested in doing low-resolution sprite art. However, now that even 640x480 is considered low-resolution, it's probably much more effective to use pre-rendered sprites like in old-school PC games. (Starcraft, Diablo, etc.) You model the sprite once, animate it once, then you can generate frames in all directions with as many keyframes as you want. Takes some work setting it up (you want the camera and the light to be positioned at the same place for all renders, for example) but it's no big deal.
