measuring current?

I know this is kind of a silly question, but how exactly do we measure current? I know that if i use a multi-meter to analyze a circuit, i can derive current, from knowing its voltage and resistance, but specifically, how does that work? how do we know that this is how current is found? i'm sure the answer is a lot simpler than i'm making it..

You can get a "current clamp" which is a multimeter designed for testing curernt flow. It clamps around a cable, and detects the level of magnetism to compute the current flow magnitude.

Current is otherwise not easy to test because it requires ultra-low impendance (almost 0 resistance) to accurately measure flow.

Perhaps what you are looking for is the Galvanometer. The typical one used in ammeters is the Moving Coil type of Galvanometer which basically follows the principle that if properly arranged, the amount of current passing through it is directly proportional to the amount of deflection of the coil, and so you can attach a needle to the coil and make a measuring scale out of it.
