code tags add extra lines

I find that the code tags like to put alot of additional blanks lines between what I type and the code. For example, I've put one blank line between this text and the code tag:

this is some code...
lots of code...
more code...

And now there's a bunch of space between my code and my text. I like to use code tags for shorter snippits, usually 2-3 lines. For short code pieces, I find it annoying to have lots of spare space between the code and my text. The only way to make it right is to cram the code tags right up next to my text, and that makes it harder to write and edit. Though I'll live with the way it is now just fine, I see no reason why extra lines should be added; there don't seem to be any extra for source tags. It would be nice to have this changed to no inserted lines, if you have the time. Thanks! Oh, and by blank lines, I mean the same space between one paragraph in writting and another.
