-----This program is being written in visual basic 6----- --(I know the software is old and crappy, but I'm poor)-- I am setting out to work on a small code window for a map editor I am making. The code window will be for scripting, which will be built right into the maps. My question is, how would I go about creating a text area similar to the work area in, say, VS or codeview in Dreamweaver (or similar applications)? That is, the area where you type would be able to change the colour of certain keywords while leaving the rest alone. I've never tried anything like this before, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. -Kris

The Visual Basic.NET compiler is free and included in the .NET Framework. The Visual Basic.NET 2005 Express IDE is free and available to download from Microsoft. Google for a link.

FYI.

Use a RichText control, then scan the text whenever it changes to match against your list of keywords, etc. Insert RTF codes for color and other formatting as appropriate.

Is this true? The whole thing is free? I've seen it sold at stores. Is that the professional edition or similar?

Yes, totally free. See this MicroSoft site for more information. And it's not just VB. It's C++, C#, J# and SQL Server. They are cut down versions of the professional versions (see the FAQ for more details) but it appears to be associated tools that aid development that aren't present.
