Creating sound effects
How can I make my own sound effects? I'm looking for hockey sound effects (and just like art, they don't have them or they cost), but I don't know how I can make some of my own, cheaply.
Hey,
Provided that you have your own software and hardware that allows you to record and mix audio- the rest is simply a process of being creative. For example:
If you wanted to make the sound when players skid to a stop on the ice- try freezing water into a flat slab and then record yourself scraping it with various items. More than likely this will take some trial and error, but after trying various materials on the ice you should hopefully arrive on a sound that can be further altered digitally. Try all sorts of effects, from layering to reversing the sounds, adding reverb or distortion or changing the actual pitch.
Get creative- think outside the box and use whatever materials you can to make these sounds.
Now- if you don't have the software or hardware (or don't know how to use it) that is a very different story and I'll be glad to help you out in any way possible.
Write me back if you need more info. Hope that helps!

Depends on if you're on PC or Mac. At home I've been using Cakewalk Sonar, which is great. It can do both MIDI, VST and audio work. This might be more than what you're wanting. There is also Sony Audition (which used to be Cool Edit Pro) and Soundforge. Both of these programs work well with audio and could be what you wanted.
Mics: I have a Schure PG58- which is a decent, stanard mic.
I don't know what kind of PC you're using, but you'll need to have plenty of CPU power, RAM and a good sound card to make the audio clear.
If you need anything else- let me know!

Thanks for the reply nsmadsen, I'm not looking for the best quality, because I'm covering all aspects of my game, sound, art, programming, and whatever else I've missed. I'm guessing about a year time-frame for the game. What I am looking for is something you would suggest I use to get sounds away from my computer. Maybe a digital recorder, like reporters use to interview, because I have to be able to take it elsewhere (my computer is in an office in my house).
Also I have Audacity, do you have any comments on that?
Thanks for you time,
Kenny
