dear ppl , first , happy new year ( well it is almost new year ) . all the best :) 2nd , as the title says i am gathering a "team"/"group" to develop an online(for me online means that discussions for the project will be online :) project in java . Since last semester i was learning java it is time now for some practice . so if you are interested in this you can PM me . i almost forgot to mention what the project is about . it will include network programming and some graphics, which leads to the conclusion that it's gonna be a simple game for example . still it is open for discussion/ideas :) enjoy my english :) , -yani

I would love to join...but I don't believe I am at your level yet, seeing as though I know nothing about networking in java.

What type of game are you making and what skills do you have? I'm very interested, but I don't have the time to join groups unconditionally. I can do (and have actually done) tcp/ip sockets in java and I've made several small scale games in java. I'm actually working on small arcade type games in java for a site right now and I've temporarily ran out of inspiration. Oh, and in the off chance I sounded professional, I don't expect any pay or anything; though if I work alot on a game I'll probably want to post it on my site(with credits/links to other people of course). My website and E-mail are in my profile.

P.S. I've been reading both of Mat Buckland's books on AI and I need an excuse to use them.

hi yani,

can you give some more information on the project you are planing ? or is this still to be decided ?

i already did a small multiplayer game in java (see link in signature) so i might be able to help you. so feel free to contact me...

Hmm, I've been thinking about writing a small scale 2D real time strategy game in java. Would anyone be interested in a project like that? If there are not any responses on this thread in a few days I'll probably start a new thread in the help wanted forum about an RTS in java.

By the way, I have difficulty taking anyone who can't provide proof of competence seriously. The tank game seems pretty cool n0rmanfreak, but I've yet to see anything from the rest of you.

at marcmassacre:
It is not necessary for everyone to know about networking. I expect one or two people will build a framework for the networking and then it can be handled independent of the main game mechanics.

hello again ,
at the beginning my idea was to form a group of newbies to java ( not to programming ofc :)), and learn while building up our project . i would like if someone experienced joins the project to "show" us how things are done from time to time . my idea for the project was to write some turn based game ,but i am fine if you want RTS .

and here comes the question of competence , dude , Alrecenk , i can assure you that i can understand almost everything of what you are able to code in Java ,but i am lacking the practice (except some GPS-based stuff i wrote for my professor , but this is far away different from game programming ).
So the point is , i would like to join this RTS project if you are patient with me at the beginning :)

waiting for reply ...

at everyone else
guys , go skiing :))))

enjoy my english,

The RTS is not a final or thoroughly thought out idea in any way. It was just a suggestion I thought I'd throw out since this thread seemed to be dieing. I wouldn't have any problem doing something else as long as it is interesting and not too big(I plan on spending weeks to months not months to years). If you have any ideas please share them.

I'm just looking for a good oppurtunity to program on a small team on a short-term project. Java is my language of choice for small projects and I recently learned how to do tcp/ip sockets in java so this thread caught my attention. I figure anything we do should lend itself well to OOP and shouldn't require much graphics. I don't like reading other people's code much (it's very time consuming) so I'd much prefer something that can easily be broken up into lots of classes and methods, and I doubt we'll get artists working for us so we'll have to use premade graphics if any. That probably goes without saying, but I figured I'd say it anyway just in case.

As for my personal preference, I'm inclined to lean towards a space game for 3 reasons:
1. There are easy to draw with just a few images(planets, satellites, ships, asteroids, and not much else).
2. Pathfinding isn't necessary because steering behaviors work well in mostly empty space.
3. Mostly empty space will also probably work well for multiplayer.

That statement annoys me a little since all you have seen of mine is what is linked to on my website(and possibly some of the things I've posted about). I'm not going to go into numbers sufice to say that is a small(<30%) crosssection of my work, and that's not even considering things I'm able to code, but haven't yet.

I don't mean to come off as hostile, but my previous post was intended to provoke you to post examples or links to any previous work(game related or not). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but if you get a team where the majority is incompetent you won't get anything done. That is the reason I like for potential team members to post links or explanations of their previous work. The people you want on your team will have no trouble doing so( in fact most of them will give links without being asked), and it gives everyone an idea of what the team is capable of(which will hopefully prevent us from setting our goals to high).

Let me add here that I've seen many teams fail to accomplish anything due to actual lack of commitment. That can be a danger far worse than lack of skill, since one can acquire experience and knowledge depending on his proficiency with computer programming, when helping out a team code a game.

Therefore, welcoming newbies on a team can be a healthy thing for the project, since they're eager to learn something new, and will follow your requirements strictly to the point. Plus, they will never cease to love the project, which can happen easily with seasoned veterans that have many projects going on at once.

But of course, there's a point where total 'noobness' is worthless and will only slow the team down.. ;) It's up to you to level wether your game can afford a place for newbies or not, based on your requirements.
