Hi, I'm posting here because i didn't found a better place. I discovered The Microsoft's DDS texture format, and am quite interested (less disk space used, faster loading, less video memory used). I use OpenGL (nooo, don't move my post to the OpenGL section!), program on Linux, and am a bit worried about legal issues for this format. Can I use it totally freely in a commercial game ? What am I not allowed to do ? Does somebody knows what is the mathematic algorithm used for DX1/DX5... formats ? Thank's lot (and good new year for everybody :)) (Sorry for my language, I'm french and my english isn't very fluent) [Edited by - Galdor on January 1, 2007 6:33:54 AM]

DDS is completely unburdened. You'll need something to actually load the DDS file (I think NVIDIA released some code), and there's an extension called ARB_texture_compression that will enable you to use the S3TC format. This thing might be useful.

Ok, thank's guys.
I was a bit affraid DDS has some special licence such as MP3 (you've to give money to Fraunhaufer to be allowed to use it).
