is the ps2's mips r5900 natively backwards compatible with the psx's mips r3000, or is it emulated in some way?

more importantly...would a ps2 be compatible with a game designed for mips r3900?

I can't remember which parts of the PS2 architecture are public, and which are still under NDA, so I won't answer the first question.

However, the likelyhood of a game written for something besides the PS2 working on the PS2 are astronomically low, unless it's a simple game that you've got the source to, and you have a compiler for the language in question, and you're willing to spend some time massaging it.

Your question isn't clear, a video game machine is much more than just the CPU. But you can play PS games on a PS2, if that's what you are asking.
