i recently installed both windows and ubuntu on my computer. ubuntu automatically set up drivers for my video card, network card, and integrated audio. windows didn't do s***. i spent some time getting the video and network to work, but it just doesn't like my audio setup. my motherboard is an asus k8v se. everywhere online it says the the audio i have is adi ad1980. i've tried installing tons of drivers for this, and none of them work. any thoughts? All the relevant drivers for your motherboard, including audio, should be here.

more importantly..is there a place to get directx 9 without windows validation?
No, get a legitimate version of Windows.

maybe soon but not now.
it doesn't make sense that an operating system that costs $100+ wouldn't work as good as a free one.
is this an admission of software piracy?

I tried this, but it gave me the same sort of error that the other ones did. it can't find the hardware.

Before i tried getting these drivers to work, the device didn't even appear here. i added it myself, but for some reason it just doesn't seem to like my hardware. it can't be a problem directly related to the hardware, because it works fine on ubuntu. maybe my windows installation is corrupt or something. maybe i should just get a genuine windows key thingy.

i didn't realize that installing windows on 2 computers was piracy.
It makes perfect sense, ubuntu is a community driven OS so generally speaking, new releases (not talking about updates) are made quicker, so newer drivers will be available with the core release quicker.
I have many pcs here, when I got windows xp RTM, it did not detect graphics, modem or network, then on SP1 it detected all but network, and on SP2 edition of windows, it detected everything (it was one of my testing machines, so I do quite a bit of installing!)
Anyway, use Ubuntu and stop pirating!

I think when you use the same key on 2 computers thats it - your key is marked as no longer being genuine. So yes, it would fix one computer, but don't touch the other one.
Your activation is based on your hardware and tied to your product key. If you have already activated Windows on one computer, you will need to reactivate it when you intall it on another computer or if too many components of your computer change. I think you can reactivate online 3 times, after that, you need to call in. If you want Windows installed on several computers, you will need to buy a license for each one.

The website says you have "SoundMAX Audio". I'm surprised that you would have VIA AC'97 in the list. Uninstall the AC'97 device. Then, take a look at the devices under "Other devices" to see if you can find a "Multimedia device" or similar. Also make sure you got the Win2K drivers if you're running WinXP 32-bit and the WinXP drivers if you're running WinXP 64-bit.
jfl.
