So a popular way of rendering faces is to use depth testing otherwise, except when faces are rendered with blending, and must be sorted someway? I think I learned this years ago, I'm now trying to remember it when I'm programming. Does this mean, that I cannot use display lists for transparent faces? I want to use display list for a model, but if it contains transparent faces, I must use display list only for all other faces, and then render transparent faces with some sorting algorithm without display lists. Correct? That is the direction I think I'm going now, but I would like to hear if there other ways. How is that matter solved usually? This looks like it is getting messy my way.

You shouldn't really need to be using display lists anymore, it seems no one wants to touch them anymore anyways. Check out VBOs and Vertex Arrays. Anyways - sorting faces by distance for transparency, no you won't be able to use display lists, as you'd need to recreate them every time the order of geometry changes. Pretty much the same applies to VBO, you'd need to buffer again.
