Can anyone point me in the direction of some easy to use programs for creation of floating point textures (free programs)? I'd also like a place where I can find the file format definitions (such as which bit should be what in the headers etc.) for any floating point image file format(s) that are widely spread and popular. Also I'd like to hear if there are any file formats that the OpenGL and DirectX APIs support, for example if the DirectX method CreateTextureFromFile() can handle the formats. Finally I'd like to hear some general opinions on which formats you think are the best floating point formats for game textures, height maps and other uses, and which ones you think will become the most widely spread formats in the nearest future.

The DirectX texture file format DDS can take any pixel format you can think of, even in cubemap form and with mip maps. The documentation on it in the DX SDK is a bit outdated, though. You have to google a bit for more present updates. Very straightforward, once you got the basics set up.

Gonna try that "Indie" stuff I keep hearing about. Let's start with Splatter.
