Some whining

I'm going to tell you a little story about some people who I don't think are very good, who I consider jerks and really think need to be evaluated on some level by the people who run this site. A few months ago, a little under three, I had run into some pretty difficult times in my life and didn't have a whole lot of people to talk to. I guess I mistakenly decided to bring that to #gamedev, and though it didn't seem like a problem to me it was clearly a major annoyance. I brought it up way too much over the course of those couple months and I'll admit I even whined about it on a few occasions. But since then I've dealt with it, and I haven't actually brought it up in coversation for almost a month now. Of course, that seemed to really bother a lot of people, and now I'm being constantly ridiculed for it. I can't talk about certain things without someone bringing it up and making a big stink about it. I'm being called a "whiny bitch" by ops who have admitted to goading me on just because they like pissing me off (Promit). I've been unable to actually get answers to the vast majority of my questions because people just tell me to screw off or "go cut myself" because I'm "angsty" and "emo". I've been trying, for nearly a month, to get people to lay off. Strangely enough the problem doesn't seem to lie within the general population of the channel, but with the ops and their "circle of friends". Yeah, eerily reminiscent of high school "clique" behavior. Anyway, this group of people who won't remain nameless consists primarily of Promit, Washu, MaulingMonkey, and occasional others who like to join in a bash-the-emo pogrom once in a while. Generally someone else in the channel will bring up the topic out of the blue and it's all downhill from there, with primarily those people inciting the argument further and turning to personal attacks ("whiny bitch", "emo", "go kill yourself", calling me "child", "incompetant", "immature"), even when I'm not in the channel. I realize now that the chat wasn't the place for it and I can't expect their sympathy, but this behavior, especially by people you'd expect to be the voice of reason, is absolutely unacceptable. All I have to say is that a number of the ops in #gamedev are laughable. Absolutely everything they say is critical and condescending, especially with guests and newcomers. It seems like at times they don't exist to keep order in the channel, but to refine and boast the importance of their little circles. If you're not a yes-man to every single one of their actions you're inferior. At least, that's how they come across. And then, if you've annoyed them sufficiently they'll alienate you and posit firmly that you're inferior, and that you're not worthy of their time, not in the slightest. I've taken a break and I don't want to go back, but unfortunately that channel is the only half-decent resource for general programming talk I've come across. Though recently I haven't been able to get a word in edgewise between all the ridicule I get, particularly from the people I'd have expected to be more restrained. Yeah, I've had some problems, and I'll admit I bitched and whined quite a bit for a period of time about the crap going on in my life, but that was the past. I've not done it for quite a while now, and I think it's time to put it to rest. This is a lot more than a "they made fun of me make it stop" post; it's a major character flaw among a number of people who control that channel. They have massive swollen egos, an intense superiority complex, and are unbelievably critical and/or dismissive of anything their "subordinates" talk about, and generally have no problem antagonizing people for their own personal enjoyment. No, it's probably not permanent, I just need a break from those people for a while. And I realize this post will probably not much of anything but make it worse, but it's worth a shot. I don't think I'll get a whole lot of support here, but that's expected and cannot be used as an indicator of this issue's legitimacy. Many of the people subject to this behavior have either lashed out and been banned or have simply up and left because they can't take it any longer. I didn't e-mail the staff, because I know how that goes. I don't believe that it ever gets through to them in some cases, just because the people who are the problem could potentially be the people it goes to. A number of people have gone that route and it doesn't seem to do anything. The way things go this will probably end up closed because one of them doesn't like this, but I think issues like this need to be brought up publicly so that those in the community affected by them can have an opportuniy to speak and not be dismissed as "oh another person annoyed by the ops". There's a reason a lot of complaints have been brought up against the following people. It's not because people don't like them, it's because they are actual problems. Promit, Washu, Oluseyi (hasn't been in the chat for a long time, but admits to inciting arguments "for the fun of it"), John Hattan (be cynical and useless about everything), and April have all been guilty of this sad behavior. There are others to throw under the bus, but I think those are the primary jerks. 2007-01-06 02:24:18 anyway 2007-01-06 02:24:27 Why do so many of you watch anime/hentai? 2007-01-06 02:24:33 I don't know anyone IRL that does 2007-01-06 02:25:04 <@Promit> ra, now filter out Washu and nakor. how many are left linking to 4chan? 2007-01-06 02:25:15 <@Promit> or anime/hentai 2007-01-06 02:25:32 Promit: I don't mean linking to 4chan, but a lot of people in the programming community, or at least GameDev are into that stuff 2007-01-06 02:25:45 <@Promit> no ra, not really. 2007-01-06 02:26:05 Promit: uh.. ya rly 2007-01-06 02:26:14 like half the people in this channel watch it 2007-01-06 02:26:35 <@Promit> way to make sweeping statements, jackass. 2007-01-06 02:26:52 Promit: it's not a sweeping statement, it's an observation bud 2007-01-06 02:27:20 <@Promit> i can observe that you're a fucking whiny bitch, too. but as a matter of course i don't, and i think you'd disagree. 2007-01-06 02:27:51 Promit: I can observe that you're a stuck up prick, but as a matter of course I don't 2007-01-06 02:28:22 <@Promit> i'm the prick? you're the one talking shit about "half the people in this channel" 2007-01-06 02:29:13 Promit: I'm not talking any shit 2007-01-06 02:29:18 I just asked why so many people here were into that 2007-01-06 02:29:35 <@Promit> "so many people" <-- there you go again 2007-01-06 02:29:36 Why are you being so defensive Promit? ... snip snip ...

I see the name Promit come up alot lately, almost always negative. First he admits he wants to ban Programmer One(In which Washu denies that it ever happens, even tho several people can confirm this). I think there was another incident discussed in the non-existant thing, and now this.

I really think Promit never should have been made a moderator. In fact, I'm very tempted to say that he should be dragged outside and shot. But, I won't say that. Because it's wrong.

The GDNet senior staff/mods should reconsider their decision, and take away Promit's 'powers'. As I review that IRC log, I actually reconsider what I said. Promit should be dragged outside and shot. Why? Because that is NOT how to act, especially not as someone who has to keep GDNet's reputation high. Remember, this site is used by people from the industry.

Come across indeed, there's a better place. But, that one doesn't exist. So that's really bad.

No whining. Enough of the "What do you dislike about X?" or "What Y can't you stand?" threads.
In time the project grows, the ignorance of its devs it shows, with many a convoluted function, it plunges into deep compunction, the price of failure is high, Washu's mirth is nigh.
