I am starting with opengl and i'm stuck on the first step-yeah it's compiler. Now i have dev-C++ and visual studio C++ 2005. I'm more familiar with devC++ but the code is important not the compiler. And i would like to know wich compiler is the best for writing the openGL code and wich are you using. [Edited by - rupr on January 10, 2007 6:58:38 AM]

I had the same problem, finding a free compiler that didn't require fixing lots of linker errors...
I finally setteled on using borland's free compiler.
You can get this from the borland website, you have to subscribe, but it's free.

Then move glut32.dll to your windows/System or /System32 I can't remember, hopefully someone else can correct these instructions if they are wrong...
Then move glut32.lib into the BCC55/Lib
in the BCC55/Include make a new folder called GL this should hold gl.h glaux.h glu.h and glut.h

You will need to add Borland/BCC55/Bin to the path

Then in the examples the line #include <vcl.h> I had to comment out.
Then to compile use

bbc32 -W lesson1.cpp -o bmp.cpp

Where -W is the command for a windows component and the bmp.cpp are any support files that have to be compiled with it.

Please correct any errors I have made in this. But give that a try, and if you have trouble, just post what happ. I will try to help you out.

Is the link for the borland compiler download
It also has a help file on how to use the compiler next to it.

First, do you plan on using C or C++? I assume C++.

There is no such thing as the best for OpenGL code, they all use the same library. I would however like to warn about Borland's compiler, it's almost as non-standard-compliant as VC6 (with a fairly new SP (4)). For a little list of the most serious issues see this (it does require an intermediate understanding of C++ to fully understand all errors).

The differences between Visual Studio and Dev-C++ is the same as it's for regular C++ code. Visual Studio is generally considered as a superior IDE on Windows. I'm not sure exactly what state Dev-C++'s compiler is in, AFAIK it's a port of GCC, but I'm not sure if it's as good as the original or even a port of the newest version (if it's then it can definitely compete against Visual C++).

Why is it that you want another compiler? Don't you know how to link to the appropriate libraries?

I prefer VS 2005. You'll have to download the Platform SDK in order to get the opengl headers and libraries, but it's not difficult.

I was just asking if there is any compiler wich is something special in any aspect of openGL. I decided to use visual studio. and installing SDK right now! thanks

OpenGL is just an API so I think there wouldn't be a compiler that treats OpenGL differently from other APIs. There might be some IDE that lets you test and display your OpenGL app within the IDE though.

Personally I like to use M$ VS C++ 2005 Express along with the Platform SDK since it is free (or at least was free when I downloaded it) and doesn't require you to fix lots of errors. Additionally I find the MSDN help that is included or can be read online helpful in most cases where I run into compiler errors.

I also tries DevC++ some time, but there were many bugs to be fixed and compiler output was not that helpful.
