hi I'm about to start a research project which involves two subjects communicating in different languages through a very simple kind of translation system, but I'm not sure what software would be best to use. Here are the basic features: - The two subjects log in on different computers (perhaps online, although not strictly necessary). - Input interface can be relatively simple. It may ultimately involve some kind of very simple game, but nothing fancy in terms of graphics or anything. Like a simple applet, through which they interact. - Players communicate using strings. May also involve passing of simple graphics (say pictures), but nothing terribly demanding. - The communication between the players must be processed, and this is the tricky part (as far as I can see). Although the data being passed back and forth is simple, the processing is much more heavy. Potentially I need a lot of computational power, so it has to be server-side. Basically involves simple string-manipulation, tree-search, etc. Ideally this should be done in compiled code, maybe C, but java might be okay too. The thing is, I'm hesitating about which way to go in terms of a platform. Initially I was set on using Java (maybe with Servlet?), but I'm wondering if this is the best way to do it. I really don't have any experience in programming outside of simulation-type research applications, which don't involve multiplayer real-time interaction. Also I haven't programmed in Java for ages. Any suggestions?
