hi! i'm working on an 3d engine in opengl atm, and i've come to the point where i have to add collision detection and physics. i'd like to use newton or ode. can i use those libs for basic stuff like collision detection (players cannot go through walls, rockets explode on impact etc) and gravity (players jump and fall down again) as well, or are they suited for advanced stuff only? thanks! :)

They are very well suited for the basic stuff you've listed.

I recently starting using ODE and I have to say it would be great for what you're looking for. It's easy to use and so far very stable for me. I haven't used it with a huge scene with tonnes of objects but in my limited testing performance is also great. Check it out.

newton! newton! My HIGHLY subjective experience would shove ODE to **.

Well, more seriously speaking, when figuring out a library suitable for particular use, trying out more than one alternative is never a bad option. Both ODE and newton are systems where it is fairly easy to get something up and running. Investigating both won't take up that much time, but will probably save you some instead, since it might help you avoid trouble later on.
