I have been wanting to learn about security since I first began programming, but I never tried to because I've always been learning something else. Now that has changed, I was wondering if any of you know what I should start with to begin learning about networking and security. I know this is a very broad topic but I want to learn it thoroughly. What I need to know to begin learning it though, is what do I need to learn, obviously there's some C/C++ involved, but there has to be other langauges/protocols/APIs to learn. Furthermore, can anyone recommend books to read that will catch me up on the exploits and how to defend against them or a site that would know some good books to read on the subject. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.

It depends on what you mean by security. There's the whole code correctness thing about avoiding buffer and integer overflows and the like. Then there's data verification so you don't go and do command #15 when you've only got 10 commands defined or happily dump your entire database just because somebody said to or something like that. Then there's all the big words like authentication, encryption, Kerberos, etc, etc. You could spend a year just hitting the basics.

I suppose you could start with something like "Writing Secure Code" by Howard and LeBlanc.

Security Engineering may be useful for covering the broad view of the field, and for considering secure systems rather than the language/API-level implementation details.

Required reading for anybody with an interest in Computer Security, or stealing art. :-)
