I recently posted this on this forum, and I got lots of good opinions from people, mostly canadians, about where I should go for a living outside Brazil. Fact is, I recently got hired by a Canadian company in Ottawa, and within a couple of weeks I shall have the temporary work permit and the temporary resident visa ready, to enter Canada. So I wished to thank many of you for your help, the community as a whole for being so welcoming to me since I first came here, and especially to Mr. CaptainJester, who introduced me to the owner of the company where I currently work ;) Thanks folks! I hope you enjoy Ottawa, I've been eyeing some job postings there, and I've heard nothing but good about working in the Ottawa tech sector from classmates.

Oh, and 'enjoy' the weather we're having this time of year.

Wow, from Brazil to Ottawa, that's a big change in climate.

How are you liking the winter so far?

The winter this year has been anything but a typical Ottawa winter. I just got out of my car and heard birds singing. They should all be gone by now.

On the plus side, you'll be here in time for Winterlude. Hit the canal, grab a Beavertail, and look at some snow scultures (provided it gets cold enough for the canal to freeze).

Cool! I doubt the canal will be open any time soon... in it's entirety I mean, a small portion should be open for winterlude BUT there's always inline skating! Rollerblades are cool.

I'm still in Brazil, I'll travel in a couple of weeks, as soon as I'm legal to enter Canada. Visa processes can also be rather slow. Therefore, I haven't seen the Canadian winter yet.. I'm bringing tons of heavy coats though, and I'll make sure to buy a few more over there.

You just need one good coat. I strongly suggest something that has a good hood. Removable hoods, and ones that can be tucked away into the collar are NOT good hoods, and you should avoid them.

Also, a good pair of gloves, or mittens are a must if you spend more than a minute or two in the cold where shoving your hands in your pockets won't be enough. The longer you are out, the heavier you want your mittens. Gloves, where your fingers are in their own part are good only for short outside adventures and fairly warm temperatures. Ones where you can keep your fingers next to each other are far better at keeping you warm, as gloves isolate your fingers, letting them cool off more and not share warmth.

A good pair of boots is useful too. I personally wear leather work boots with a steel toe. I however do not suggest getting a pair in the middle of winter as breaking them in is enough of a pain when they're not frozen. Also you have to be careful, as many don't have enough insulation between the toes and the steel cap, and then the cap and the air. Which can lead to VERY chilly toes. Get something fairly high with a solid tongue and fully water proof. Wet feet mean cold feet.

The weather changes quite rapidly in here, so in 2 weeks, it might even be warm again.

At the moment I'm typing this, the wind chill in Ottawa reads -23' C

I didn't think two weeks was that short? Weather patterns move much faster than that, don't they?

Here in southern Alberta it can change a good 30 degrees celsius overnight (mostly due to chinooks though). (Un)Fortunately there won't be any of those in Ottawa.

I was aware of such low temperatures... In my entire life (which is a short one still, by the way - I am 22), I've 'seen' negative temperatures no more than twice, I guess. And still, these were within the -5C to 0C range. ;)

I will make sure to buy good clothes.. But I'm counting with good heating systems inside buildings - I would hate to have to work out at the GYM with too many clothes getting in the wa ;)

Thanks for the advices, and hope to hit Canada soon. Waiting is a boring thing to do (at least I get some time now to code lil' games =)

Welcome to Ottawa! :)

I'm sure you'll like it here.

You can go skating in the morning, have brunch, go to any choice of museums or galleries for the afternoon, then go to an NHL game and have dinner. Finally you can go to the Casino for the evening and hopefully win some money. With your winnings you can go to strip clubs and so on and so fourth....

If only I had the energy to do all that on one day :)
