Recently I've been receiving return emails from a bunch of different sites saying that I've been emailing out executable attachments, but I haven't. I think that some spammer is putting my domain in the header of their emails, but I'm not sure. I don't want this to spiral out of control and turn into something bad, like me getting the blame for spamming emails to people. Any recommendations on what to do? Here is one of the many emails that I've received...

To ensure that Glasgow City Council's corporate policy for ICT security is adhered to, emails containing executables (files that may contain program code) are intercepted. Such an email, apparently sent by you, has been received at our mail gateway. It has been quarantined, in line with the above procedure, as such files may contain viruses that could disable the Council's entire network. Recipient is aware that email has been quarantined and may contact you, in the near future, to verify the content of this mail. Quarantined mail details: From: fkb@mywebsite.com To: caroline.barr@cls.glasgow.gov.uk Subject: Hand in Hand Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2007 14:04:05 -0600
Thanks EDIT: I've done some research into this, and the technique they are using is called forging headers, if that helps

This is a well-known phenomenon: spammers use a harvested address (or domain name) as a fake From: header. This is the reason why many web sites advise against responding to spam (because you might be blaming someone who is innocent).

You're not sending the e-mails, and I doubt anyone even remotely competent would blame this on you. For those not competent enough, send out a canned response saying that you're not responsible, and the headers were forged to make it seem that the mail was coming from you.

Alternatively, if your computers are infected with a virus, you might be the unknowing source of the mails. Run an antivirus scan.
