So I was watching Dodgeball last night, for those you who haven't seen the movie, see it, and, uhm, spoiler. I noticed that, on the chest of money he wins by betting on Average Joe's when they have fifty to one adds, and he then uses to buy Globogym, it says Deus Ex Machina. How very appropriate.
Ok.
Quote:I just caught that the other day when it was on - made me laugh [grin]. I always like it when movies have a few difficult-to-spot jokes that you usually don't notice the first time through.

I really don’t know why Anchorman and Dodgeball did so well when fight club bombed.
While I can't begin to fathom why fight club "bombed" (even though it was #1 in the box office on opening weekend), I do know why Anchorman was a hit; Will Ferrell. That guy has consistently put out hilarious movies, and I'm sure people expected more of the same. I personally thought Anchorman was hysterical, and numerous times throughout the film I was gasping for air.

The majority of people can't tell the difference between genius and crap.
That's a little pretentious, don't you think? Everyone says that, and I myself have been guilty of the sentiment more than once. Still, kind of BS to label most people as morons just because they have a different opinion.

What is the relationship between Anchorman, Dodgeball and Fight Club?
I brought up Anchorman because, like dodge ball, I thought it made way too much money for a movie that really wasn’t that good. On a comedic level,I thought those two films were on par with Death to Smoochy.
I say Fight Club bombed because the production cost was $63 million and they only made about $100 million world wide at the boxoffice. I’m not sure if it is true or not, but I heard a while back that the production studios only get about half of what is made at the box office. If that is true then the movie lost money.
There's no accounting for Hollywood accounting... [grin]

You're ignoring DVD sales, though.
From Wikipedia (yeah I know it's not a very reliable source, whatever):
Quote:
The film was a box office disappointment (although it was #1 at the U.S. box office in its first weekend) and critical reaction was mixed, but a cult following soon emerged due to the DVD's popularity upon release. Many critics and audiences later had a change of heart and the film appeared on many 'best of the year' lists and soon developed a following. For example, Entertainment Weekly, which had originally given the film a negative grade of D, later ranked the DVD #1 on its list of "The Top 50 DVDs You Need To Own." The DVD market, which was experiencing rapid growth at the time, caused Fight Club not only to break even, but actually become profitable.
