Many websites, including Gamedev, require you to have an email address to get your password. Why? I signed up on SimCountry yesterday, and it said it would email me, which of course it did. But there is a problem. Since the day I joined Gamedev, however many months ago that was, I haven't been able to check my email at all. Why, you ask? Because the only way I can get online is at school, and the school proxy server won't let me get onto yahoo's mail services to check my email. So any website that sends your password to your email makes it impossible for me to join. I got lucky the day I joined Gamedev, I was at this guy's house while my dad was helping him with something, but that was a one-time thing. So why do websites send you password through your email?
But why is an email address required?
So you can get password reminders, for one reason. And you can't just say "Here's your password" and display it on the web page, because then anyone could say they forgot their password, pretending to be someone else, and just be told their password.

But why is an email address required?
because it makes it significantly harder for spambots to register hundreds of accounts and go nuts.
On my message board, I used to have a "no e-mail neccessary!" policy, because I found it to be a hassle and I wanted to encourage people to post.
It took only a few weeks for the spambots to ruin it beyond salvage.
I lost some books at the public library, but gdnmail isn't blocked, yay! So I have to change the email address on my profile, now. Thaks, problems solved, questions answered.
The reason why e-mail addresses are required for lost passwords is obvious, and the reason why your password is sometimes e-mailed to you initially is to ensure your e-mail address is valid. Of course, that's alot more annoying than simply putting a confirmation link in the e-mail that needs to be clicked.
Neither of my two websites require e-mail addresses, but they both rely on javascript. Bots don't parse or execute script so that gets rid of that problem.
