when you add a .so like this: gcc -o test-bin test.o mylib.so does it add the entire so to the output or just link it on startup?

mylib shold be resoleved (loaded) when test-bin is started.

if you run:
> ldd test-bin

you'll get at list with all dynamicly loaded libraries (and where they are found)
