Home Network Problem?

Finally got my laptop I've been working for months to get. Got the wireless router, plugged it in, got internet going on my old desktop and on my laptop, even got the file sharing and printer sharing working. I don't have a problem until I start transfering. The files stransfer OK, it's jsut that it takes 10 mb just to transfer a 100mb folder. Is this normal? The router is saying it has a speed of 54mb/s. Shouldn't it transfer roughly that rate over a LAN? Also under My Network Places, al lthe shared folders form my Desktop show up under the category of "The Internet". I don't know if that means anything significant. Could anyone clarify this for me? I'm completely new to networking.
If it's possible for us to conceive it, than it must be possible.

Assuming this, it's calculatin' time!

1) 1 Byte = 8 Bits
2) 54 mbits / s = 6.75 mBytes / s
3) 100 mBytes / 6.75 mBytes / s = 14ish minutes, give or take.

Barring any false assumptions and miscalculations, ten minutes isn't unreasonable. It basically boils down to the difference between bits and bytes, and not trying to mix the two.

Ah I see. What about under the "My Network Places" is it normal that my LAN shared folders show up under "The Internet" category?
If it's possible for us to conceive it, than it must be possible.

I'm not sure why it would be going so slow, but wouldn't
100 mBytes / 6.75 mBytes / s = 14 seconds not minutes

8 * 100 / 54 = 14.814814815 seconds...

(only took about 10 minutes to get this to post [lol])

Sorry Zmurf, looks like my dimensional analysis skills need some evaluating. Upon reevaluating things, looks like maybe that is a little slow...

It seems like its transfering the files from my desktop, over the internet, to my computer, which makes little or no sense. I think I networked it wrong.
If it's possible for us to conceive it, than it must be possible.
