I'm looking for a programming book about how to create a GUI (not how to program with an existing GUI. A more general GUI book). It doesn't necessarily need to be a book that goes trough everything step by step, rather something that explains which techniques to use and how to design it in a good way. I want to be able to create a well designed GUI from scratch that can handle at least windows, menus and all the basic parts. It doesn't have to be made for a specific graphics API or something like that, but if possible, I want it to be in C or C++. Do you know of any books like this? I've searched around and didn't find anything yet. I only found books about downloadable GUI's, not a book about how you can create them yourself.

This looks like the sort of thing you're asking for. It's for DirectX and C++, but I'm sure you could port it to openGL / whatever if you wanted [smile].

If you are interested in the human factors side of things (the nexus of design and psychology) then this site seems to have a lot of resources. It will be more theoretical, though--what makes certain designs more intuitive, etc.--more than practical, I suppose, but it might be interesting to you.

It looks like a lot of the books listed are a bit dated, unfortunately.

And for GUI design in general this guy at guiguy.com has what appears to be one big list of GUI books in one place. That might make the search easier, especially since he links to the amazon page for the books.

Besides books you can also supplement your research with some articles on GUI building on gamedev, like here for DirectX, and there is also a great thread on building an OpenGL GUI by JavaCoolDude here.
