I was just wondering what games you all out there have bought and been soo badly dissapointed by, my list is: 1) Daikatana (I know I should have read the reviews) 2) Half-Life 2 (some love this game, but I found it kind of boring 3) Doom 3 (graphically very impressive, but alas I just wanted to run around and shoot stuff like the original, Doom3 was very slow paced game for me) 4) Halo (for PC) looked poor and ran poorly and I though other FPS's where better anyways.

I'd agree except parts of it were cool and it lets you play CounterStrike.

I was dissapointed by Oblivion until I modded it, but by that point it was kind of too late anyway. I was also kind of dissapointed by the linear-story style of Fable, but it's still a good game.

Big Rigs and Godfather. The latter was kinda fun, but didn't really feel all to polished and was way too easy.

Dungeon Seige II. If you're going to clone Diablo, at least clone the good bits.

UFO: Aftershock (the second one in that series).

As an X-Com clone, they could have spent some time actually making it interesting rather than tedious. Cultist missions are the same map as the last 100 missions (and yes, I mean last 100 missions) And when you realize that your 3 minute mission load times and 400 megs of your RAM is being taken up by poorly thought out destructible terrain information that is NEVER USED in a typical mission, you wonder where the real priorities lie.

I'm glad they did a much better job on Afterlight (well, the slightly more interesting missions and shorter load times anyway. It still leaks memory faster than anything else I've ever seen, and I HAVE actually exploited the destructible terrain a few times).

I found Halo 2 and Shenmue 2 both rather dissapointing.

Halo 2 because it was way overhyped, and a lot of the better sounding features never made it into the game. Shenmue 2 because after tens of hours of brilliant, immersive gameplay, the whole thing was ruined with a completely stupid ending.

The ending of System Shock II disappointed me. When the protagonist says "Nah.." ...worst voice acting and answer ever.

I was dissapointed in UT2003, which was not really a gameplay improvement in any way over the original Unreal Tournament. I also bought it right before the store dropped the price by $20, and our computer at the time didn't run it. When I actually got a nice computer, I had lost the CD key, so all in all it was the worst video game buy ever for me.

Other than that, I'm usually careful about how I buy games. Reccomendations from friends seem to be the most reliable way nect to actually playing the game beforehand.

Currently I hope I'm not dissapointed by Command and Conquer 3 or by Halo 3, but the demo for C&C is kickass and Halo 3 could be Halo 2 only wiht more gfx!!1~ and I'd still have fun.

lol, well this is a touchy subject for me, lots of disappointments recently, but i'll concetrate on 3.
half life 2, just boring as hell and overhyped. enough about the damn gravity gun already! it and the physics puzzles were cool at first, but the novelty quickly goes away (with me atleast). the sory and gameplay were too slow paced, the levels seemed drawn out too long, enemy ai wasn't particularly impressive either.
and Oblivion, they upgraded the graphics and threwout what i liked about morrowind. i loved morrowind because i love exploring, in oblivion everything just seems so damn generic, even the dungeons (although i will admit morrowinds weren't that special either, but less generic than oblivions imo). and secondly, i like learning to be creative in a game and being able to do something i am not supposed to, like complete this character level 45 designed dungoen with a levl 8 guys or whatnot and reaping the rewards (without cheating!). however oblivion's system has it set to where you can only find items that are fit for your level! pretty much punishing you for being creative. sure there is a mod that was made recently that fixed this, but it is not capable of doing it 100% right. although i still modded oblivion (texture mod), but then quickly moved on.
silent hill 4... lets takeout the fun of the others in the series while keeping the outdated gameplay elements and introducing more that are fatally flawed! sound fun? for it being the 4th in the series you would have expected its gameplay to be updated over the years since silent hill 2 wouldn't you? well nope, they decided to keep all of the annoying gameplay elements from sh2, which i am able to ignore because it is an old game, but sh4 is not! then they introduced a worse inventory system, a stupid healing and saving system, and a few other gimmicks... and for what reason? simply to force you back and forth, back and forth, back and forth... into "the room". if you get injured you won't waste your valueable and rare healing itmes, lets go back to the room (where you have to wait while your health slowly comes back...). got to save? lets go back to the room, need an item that you stored in the room because of the bad inventory system? lets go back to the room...
as you can see it becomes a tedious, boring game that truly revolves around travels back and forth between the room rather than actually playign a game. it becomes a walk sim! sounds fun huh? ;-)
there are others, but i am done for now.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. I was hoping for a classic style adventure game (King's Quest, Monkey Island). Instead I got real-time Myst--pretty, tedious, boring puzzles.

I have quite a few, first is tropico, I heard it was a fun sim game and I liked rollercoaster tycoon so I was all over the idea of a resort Island sim so I went bleh. Then next was the sims where you got to live another life, one of a sim who watches TV until a burgler comes in the house and steals it as you're watching it. Next. Another was Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. They totally messed up the combat system from daggerfall(ooh I have to swing my sword like 8 times to hit a rat 4 inches away, how fun!) and the traveling system from daggerfall. Warcraft 3 was another for me, I was like RPG+RTS be like starcraft and diablo(which are both awesome) but it never had the charm of either of those games. Grand Theft Auto 3 was another one where they took an awesome quick paced driving carjacking game, and turned it into a bad driver clone, but adding in guns and making it possible to die out of car. What's worse is the guns other than the sniper rifle you can't aim worth crap and people in cars have some sort of invisible force field to protect them. The freedom to do the missions in any order and multiplayer games were taken out.

The biggest disappointment of my gaming life has to be Doom 3, the wait was killer and every game put out by id so far being crazy good fragfests I bought it without even reading up on it. Biggest mistake ever as you all know Doom 3 was like they started some crappy horror singleplayer game then worked 4 years on a graphics engine while making the gameplay stink.

Summary

  • Tropico

  • The Sims

  • Morrowind

  • Warcraft 3

  • Grand Theft Auto 3

  • Doom 3

Neverwinter Nights 2. Horrible game.

You visit fake towns in between trips to boring dungeons where you face off against legions of low level miscreants. It's the hub and spoke gameplay from Diablo. None of the 4 towns you visit will be actual, fleshed out towns. They are completely external environments. You can't go inside any building except shops/temples and quest related locations.

It also follows a similar formula to most games with multiple character types. That is, there are a couple of isolated obstacles and you have several options (to accomodate the different character types) to get around the obstacle and then continue on the same path. A warrior bashes a door in and then fights off the hordes of undead. A rogue unlocks the door and then fights off the hordes of undead. How immersive.

The story and everything related to the story sucks. For some reason that stupid elf horndog gets all hot and bothered at the last battle to save mankind. The dwarves don't have a consistent accent. (Khelgar does sound like a proper dwarf, though.) Every other voice in the game is amateur or annoying (usually both). The ending blows. It's just some nerdy office gofer narrating a lousy, expansion friendly non-closer.

The interface sucks. Click on another character in your party. What do you expect to happen? If you expect that character to become the new target for all subsequent spells and actions of your current character, then you are the moron who the interface was designed for. Also irritating is the right-click menu. Right-click doesn't do anything. Right-click and hold for 3 seconds brings up a context menu.

I'm going to reinstall Baldur's Gate. Now that is a proper computer role playing game.

I shouldn't even have to mention Deus Ex: Invisible War. A farce and a betrayal to one of the most intelligent, complex, fun and mature games ever made.

Agreed.

For me, the biggest disappointment was 'temple of elemental evil'. It was BEAUTIFUL!, interesting mechanics, and based on the d&d rule set [of which I'm a large fan]. It was also devistatingly buggy, so much so that the game was nearly unfinishable. There were also rough design desicions, such as a really low level cap.

Wow was that game beautiful, Wow was that game buggy.

Oblivion. I felt like it was a single player mmo. and mmo's=most boring gameplay ever invented.

I was disappointed with halo once microsoft bought bungie, but I did play it on xbox and pc.

dues ex (original)was great and bad at the same time. new one was worse.

Supreme Commander. It was more like TA 2 than Supreme Commander. Plus it runs bad on slow systems.

I really enjoyed half life 2. But I can see how it could seem boring. The game does start off slow like the first one.

Doom 3 a little bit. too repetitive.

Defcon (I played it like a week straight when it was released, haven't played it ever since then)

Ut2003 kinda sucked...I dunno.

I enjoyed the c&c3 demo.

wow i cant think of any more? wtf is thats all thats come out in the last 5 years thats been worth even mentioning?

Pro Evo 6 on the Xbox360 - way to take out all the options. You can't even change the team names to what they are supposed to be so I have to play as "Merseyside Blue". It plays a good game of footy though.

I also agree. I happened to play through the original again a few months ago and it's still a fun, impressive game. Granted I already knew exactly what to do so I finished it in half the time, and I managed to find an exploit that allowed me to max all my skills before the final 2-3 missions ;) But all things considered, an excellent game.

I never even played the second one, precisely because everyone said how horrible it was.

The game was never going to run well on 'slow' systems, heck it makes my 2.2Ghz X2 cry in 4 player vs CPU in skirmish mode... but frankly show me a game which has more explosive fun in it...? The shear giggling madness I got the other night from launching 8 nukes at once on a CPU player was fantasic (yeah! that'll teach him to build 5 anti-nuke devices [grin]).

As for the name, probably should have been TA2, however due to rights and stuff I feel that's forgivable [smile]
