I've suddenly got this craving to play a combat flight simulator. Anyone know of any good ones worth purchasing? Also, can anyone recommend a good joystick before I go off and buy a cheap one. Thanks!!

My recommendations:

WW2 era...
IL2-Sturmovik : 1946 (only £15 on play.com)

Modern era...
Falcon 4 : Allied Force

For a joystick, I use a Saitek Cyborg Evo Force.
Works good for me.

Also for the ultimate experience play these with a TrackIR. Expensive, but highly immersive.

IL-2 Sturmovik is probably the best, along with other games from Ubisoft that use the same engine.

Well, that's if you're looking for WW2, but I can't think of any modern ones right now, sorry.

I was looking at that one earlier. It looked decent. I'm very happy with my Saitek keyboard so...

I don't mind, ultimately I think one of each would be nice. I mean, if I'm going to buy a joystick I want to get lots of use out of it.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll take a look at them :-D

This post may or may not be useful.

Lock On: Modern Air Combat - with or without the Flaming Cliffs addon, is pretty slick in terms of realism and graphics, but the gameplay (in terms of the lack of a campaign mode that I've found - or perhaps I've forgotten, I haven't played it in a while) leaves a little to be desired, IMO. It feels like something that had so much potential but wasn't given its chance.

On the other hand, if you're willing to fork out serious money for a joystick, then there are two worth considering - the Saitek X48 and its big brother, the X52. Both have a seriously good rep. in the flight sim community.

Lock On looks cool. What is the gameplay like in other respects (ie the actual flying/combat)? Is it fun? Realistic?

They look really nice. A little too expensive though. I think I'll get the Cyborg EVO with force feedback.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I guess starting tomorrow morning, I'm not going to get much work done anymore...

I can't recommend any specific software just now, but the Cyborg Evo has treated me very well.

I know they're as old as the hills now, but I got hours and hours and hours of enjoyment out of:

-> F22 Lightning 3

-> Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 (truly amazing game, thoroughly recommended)

Haven't tried Combat FS3, but I've heard it's even better.
