In regard to these free chapters from NVidia, (particularly #14), are they the actual full chapter from the book? 14 seems pretty complete, but only in a general sense; many of the intricate details are simply glossed over. On a side note, does anyone have any good links concerning the dynamic ambient occlusion method presented in chapter 14? I'm having a hell of a time with it.

A demo is available from NVIDIA along with the Whitepaper on it here.

Those are indeed the entire chapters. The book also comes with a CD-ROM.

thanks i've seen the demo, the assembly-style shaders are alien to me. I figure it would be better for me to just understand the principles of the algorithm and implement them in my own manner, but it is an incredibly complicated task

is there some kind of limit on while loops in hlsl? I switched from ps20 to ps30 and had moderate success with a while loop, but it still won't do what I want.

I believe there's a limit of 254 iterations in 3.0. There is also a limitation to the number of instructions, I believe it is 65536.

Shader model 4.0 I believe has 32-bit loop counters and an unlimited number of instructions.

I hope I don't get dinged again for replying. What a place some days...

Damn seriously? no wonder...
